About SIR Certification

SIR Certification is an independent assurance framework focused on the security and resilience of industrial radio communications used within operational technology (OT) environments.

It was developed to address a specific and often overlooked area of risk: the radio links that carry control commands and telemetry between control systems and remote or unmanned sites supporting essential services.

Why SIR exists

Across many sectors, significant progress has been made in securing digital and IP-based infrastructure. However, industrial radio systems — particularly those deployed many years ago — have not always been assessed with the same level of rigour.

SIR Certification exists to support greater visibility, understanding, and assurance of radio communications within OT systems, in a way that is proportionate, technology-neutral, and aligned with established risk management principles.

Governance and responsibility

SIR Certification is maintained and evolved through ongoing technical review and engagement with industry practitioners, asset owners, and stakeholders involved in operational technology and infrastructure resilience.

The framework is intended to be applied independently and does not mandate specific technologies, vendors, or deployment models.

Relationship to regulation and standards

SIR Certification is not a regulatory requirement and does not replace existing standards, regulations, or statutory obligations. It is designed to complement established OT cybersecurity, safety, and governance frameworks by addressing the radio communications layer specifically.

Transparency and engagement

SIR Certification supports open, responsible engagement with industry, regulators, and the wider community. Explanatory materials, technical context, and updates are published to support understanding and appropriate use of the framework.
